BSF TENNIS LEAGUE  -  by  Mark Pearson (League Chairman) - 9th May 2018

The league champions, David Lloyd Chorley, registered a convincing 8-1 win at Markland Hill this week. Chris Nott and Charlie Hutchins had marginally the best performance for the David Lloyd side, although they were pushed by the pairing of John Lister and Jordan Halsall in a 6-4 victory. Leigh CC A recorded their first win of the season in a very tight contest. The crucial result for Leigh was Andrew Johnson and Steven Smithís 6-2 defeat of Ellesmere Aís Ian Hodgkinson and Chris Fleming. Chorley A also took their first win, 6-3 over Lostock A with John Chatterley and James Richardson winning all three sets. The early results suggest that this division will be tight this season, at least in the lower positions.

Similarly, in Division 2, only Hawkshaw A have won both their opening games, this week in a 5-4 win at David Lloyd Chorley B. Mark Baxter and Tom Johnson starred for Hawkshaw winning all their sets. Another pair to win all their sets were Richard Lane and Ian Nutter for Ellesmere B against David Lloyd Abitare B. Again, their contribution was decisive as the Ellesmere team won 5-4. Although the final margin was wider, the David Lloyd Abitare A match with Elton Vale was just as fiercely contested. Each pair for both teams won a set, with 3 going to the newly introduced tie-break. The David Lloyd senior side eventually winning overall 6-3.

Eagley A followed up their opening with a good home win against Barrow Bridge A with the pairings of Andrew Seal/Rob Hands and Keith Seal/ Stuart Longworth both winning three sets. Bob Woodcock and Paul Cashmore emulated this feat, winning their sets for Lostock B against Markland Hill B. Winton and Leigh CC B were the other winners in Division 3.

David Lloyd Abitare C recorded the most convincing win of the week defeating Walmer B 9-0. The pairing of Martin Jordan/Euan Taylor with the biggest margins within the sets. Craig Owen and Craig Howarth only dropped one game, as Bradshaw A beat Chorley B 7-2. Peter Richardson and Pat Knight took three sets for Claremont to record their first win following last seasonís promotion.

The tightest match of the day was played at Elton Vale, where their B team defeated Bradshaw B 5-4. With the scores standing at 4-4, the final set went to a tie-break, the fourth of the match, three of which were won by the Bury side. Colin Lynch and Stuart Roach won all their sets in another tight win Ė for Lostock C against Hawkshaw C, both just relegated to Division 5. Newly promoted Astley & Tyldesley found the going tough at Markland Hill C, going down 8-1.

Holcombe Brook C have taken an early lead in Division 6. Dan Gisbourne and Chris Morris taking three sets in their win at Chorley C. Tyldesley Bís Ian Speakman and Lewis Walton suffered the disappointment of winning all their sets only to finish on the losing side, going down 5-4 to Bradshaw C. There was no such fate for Steve Maslivec and Tim Perris, who only dropped two games on the night, as Barrow Bridge B defeated Hawkshaw B.

Lostock D and Markland Hill D both recorded convincing victories to set the early pace in Division 7.
